SongStuff
A relative new
comer to the online world, musician/producer John Moxey has launched songstuff.com
an arist's website directed at songwriters looking for all the information
they need to succeed in this biz...I discovered John while listening to
his latest project Bibi
M. I spun the page while chatting with Mr. Moxey from his
studio somewhere on the English Isle.... |

Mb: Hello John
Songstuff: Hi Mb
Mb: So tell me about songstuff.com?
Songstuff: Well, we started about 18 months ago, just a couple of musicians
who wanted to help others with some of the common problems. I run the
site and contribute most of the articals, with some coming from my friends
in the biz. So far we're getting a really good response. I suppose the
fact that it is completely free helps!
Mb: So is it a labour of love or do you have a grand vision?
Songstuff: A bit of both. I'd like to move towards an on-line label/publisher
Mb: Are you involved in the NMA program at mp3.com?
Songstuff: Not yet. I have thought about it but because I spend a lot
of time either updating the site or creating music I've been spreading
myself quite thin. This will ease up and when the time is right I'll
probably try it
Mb: So what would someone be looking for when visiting your site?
Songstuff: Information, firstly. I guess most of this is technical in
nature, at the moment, but we are adding promotion, publishing and contract
material. In addition we also have a forum that gives online musicians
a chance to talk about their music. Lately we've been providing free
artists adverts on the site and we are adding a spotlight artist feature
so look out for that.
Mb: So do you see a niche to fill in the midst of the online music
resource world? Anything you're going to differently?
Songstuff: Well, I guess it would be to offer a unique combination of
support for musicians. A one stop shop or musicians central. Everything
from how to write a song through to recording, marketing and distribution.
Mb: Like taxi or bandname, more pragmatic?
Songstuff: Kind of, but aimed less at bands and more at songwriters.
I would like Songstuff to provide information on how to do it yourself
as well as the services themselves...
Mb: Let's talk about your music...is Bibi your main act?
Songstuff: Yeah, although I don't perform as part of the act. I'm the
mysterious writer/producer in the background. I also do my own material,
although this isn't on the web yet. Hopefully I'll be posting the first
track online with myself singing in a couple of weeks.
Mb: So what do you do for a living?
Songstuff: My day job is as a software engineer. I used to work as a
full time musician but a recession or two at the bottom of the market
kinda put an end to that...
Mb: As so many...So what do you see the future of music to be?
Songstuff: Evolving. music and the music scene is always in change. All
you can do is prepare your best and keep an open mind. Technology is
very much driving music, but it's been a while since the latest big inovation.
I guess the biggest change will be the self publishing and promoting
artist.
Mb: And that's where you come in?
Songstuff: That's my intro I guess.
Mb: Anything else you'd like to add and say to our readers?
Songstuff: Yeah. There is nothing like experience. Get your music out
there and if nothing else you'll learn, and you might get a few fans
as well.
Mb: Has the online experience been good for you?
Songstuff: You bet. Bibi M gets lots of great feedback from the online
comunity, as does songstuff. It's opened my eyes to a completely different
way of letting people find my music, and I get to help others. What could
be better.
