Shauna Skye

Shauna Skye

Shauna Skye first posted her music at mp3.com after writing some tunes in the late 90's. Up until then, she had been best known as an author of fiction, having had a number of pieces published, and later as the editor of "Moonletters" magazine. I first noticed her responding to posts on a number of BB's and found later that she was also a talent musician, and rival for my coveted crown as "Best interviewer of all Time". I chatted with Shauna from the windy city...

Mb: Hi Shauna
Shauna: Hello
Mb: So, tell me a bit about yourself....
Shauna: Hmm, let's see here. My name is Shauna. I am a musician and writer. Anything specific you'd like to know?
Mb: what do you like people to know about you?
Shauna: I know this may sound funny since I get involved with music and performing but I'm usually a private person. I am not sure what I'd like for people to know about me, but I do hope that someone out there
enjoys my music and writing.
Mb: How long have you been writing songs?
Shauna: I wrote my first song at age nine for a school assignment, but it wasn't until '98 that I started seriously writing music. I had written music before that but it wasn't very good. Others liked it but I didn't.
Mb: I was just listening to "Summer" .. very cool song.
Shauna: That one is cool! Alec Paterson of Rally wrote that one. It was a fun collaboration.
Mb: Do you record alot? What's a usual day musically for you?
Shauna: Most of my songs haven't been recorded yet. Only two available online were done in a studio. I hope to record soon though. I go through periods of writing several songs at once, then I might not write for a while.
Mb: I noticed that you're a journalist as well. Tell me about that.
Shauna: I have had poetry, fiction and editorials published mostly in the speculative fiction markets. I also used to edit Moonletters, a dark fantasy publication that came out in the mid 90s. I've written some horror, and even a bit of short romance. More recently I've done some interviews like this one, only with me asking the questions. :-)
Mb: I saw that. You post them over at artistlaunch.com.
Shauna: Yes, there are several interviews up at ArtistLaunch. I did Fastball, Jesus Jones, Ted Mason of Modern English, etc. My favorite was Ted Ansani of Material Issue. He was a good interview.
Mb: So, what prompted the pursuit of the elusive interview?
Shauna: You mean what prompted me to do interviews?
Mb: lol.. yeah
Shauna: I suppose because I'm very curious and like asking questions.
Mb: Just musicians or do you interview other public figures as well?
Shauna: I have interviewed some editors and authors, but recently it has been just music.
Mb: I noticed you've also interviewed some indie artists.
Shauna: Yes. I do find indie artists to interview sometimes.
Mb: So do you like people to think of you as a writer first, musician second?
Shauna: No, I've always wanted to be a rock star first. However, writing comes a close second.
Mb: Do you make your living writing?
Shauna: No. I wish I did though.
Mb: What's the plan for the long term musically?
Shauna: I would like to write songs that people enjoy listening to. It is hard to think too far into the future.
Mb: I see you spending some time on the Bb's
Shauna: Yes. I hang out there probably too much.
Mb: what brought you to them?
Shauna: To start with when I first got music on MP3.com it was to find other musicians and let people know I existed too. Now it is just a place to go to have conversations with others. Though the board I'm at is made up of mostly musicians they don't talk about music much. People argue a lot, yet you can make friends too. I lurked there for a long time before posting. I guess because I'm curious and liked looking in on conversations other people were having.
Mb: Are you talking about thewireweb BB, Paisley's?
Shauna: Yes, Paisley's.
Mb: A lot of rough characters hanging out there. That's where I first noticed you.
Shauna: You saw me lurking in the corner then?
Mb: lol... Saw you respond to some good threads and then noticed your interviews at artistlaunch, listened to your tunes and thought to introduce you to the community at large.
Shauna: I see. Going to drag me out of the corner then. ;-)
Mb: lol... I suppose you could say that. Don't like the limelight?
Shauna: Actually I like being the center of attention! So this is great. Let's talk more about me. haha
Mb: Well here you go then. Here's your big chance. What do you want to leave our readers thinking about you?
Shauna: This is like your first question. Very difficult! Perhaps I would like to be thought of as doing something noteworthy and not just taking up space on this planet. I'd like to be unique; a person who doesn't follow the crowd and who stands up for what I believe in. On a less serious note I'd like to be thought of as cute too. :-) Of course people will be taking everything I say as serious here. I should watch what I say!
