Karen Boshart
Tucked
away in the farmland of Ontario, resides Karen Boshart,
actress, singer, songwriter and giant heart. Her music,
though produced in the country, is anything but rural. In
contrast, it's a mixture of bitter sweet sentiment and modern
sounds and beats. With an already strong career on film
and TV, Karen is now spending time sharing her insights
and revelations through music and the web. Her Internet
presence and her dynamic outgoing personality caught my
eye and ear, and I chatted with her from her home...
Mb: Hi Karen
Karen: Hey how are ya?
Mb: So you're early .. are you always early ?
Karen: Yes I am generally early...
Mb: That says a lot about your character.
Karen: Yay for my character! That started when I began auditioning
for acting work. It was sometimes the difference between
getting a job and not getting it.
Mb: Early bird gets the worm?
Karen: Yes, that's about it.
Mb: What kind of "cattle calls" are you usually
on?
Karen: Like for what kinds you mean?
Mb: Ya.. TV, movie, commercial, music.. Where are you
most busy?
Karen: OH!...Blonde moment...lol
Mb: lol .. I didn't think you were a cow rustler!
Karen: But au contraire mon frere, I lived on a farm.
Mb: lol... No wonder you were confused.
Karen: I'm all better now. lol... Anyway, I have done alot
of stuff... I have had a really busy fall/winter. I finished
up a film with Michael Douglas called The Wedding Party,
I did a TV film with Jacqueline Bissette called America's
Prince. Oh, I was on an episode of MONK with Tony Shaloub...that
was pretty cool , I met Garry Marshall on that set. I've
done a whack of commercials as well, including EastSide
Marios, Dairy Queen, Bacardi, Molson...
Mb: In film, what kind of roles are you getting?
Karen: The role that made me laugh the most was the Wedding
Party one. I was a bartender in it and I have never mixed
a drink in my life!
Mb:Do you have a specific character you like to play?
Karen: I do have a preference. I like the psycho roles.
I did an indie film where I was a bit of a fatal attraction
in it. My dream film role would be Michelle Pfeiffer's role
in What Lies Beneath.
Mb: lol.... "Danger Will Robinson"
Karen: reereereeree (that's the sound of the plunging knife)
lol
Mb: lol...How do them men in your life respond to that?
Karen: hahahahaa Well,...ummm... actually that's maybe why
I am alone. Geeze, you just gave me a revelation about myself
here. "Gee, Karen...if you'd put the knives away, they
would come."
Mb: What attracts you to a role like that?
Karen: The intensity...I walked away feeling almost nauseous....like
I had a complete emotional workout.
Mb: Are you a drama queen?
Karen: I like drama, although I have had my fill...drama
makes for great writing material as well... When life is
going too well, my songs are pretty boring. LOL
Mb: How does the barnyard react? Do you sing to the animals?
Karen: Not anymore...but my dog does talk back de temps
en temps. LOL I sing mostly alone.
Mb: What got you into music?
Karen: Music started off as a good thing. Then as experience
dictated, the music went from being a good thing to a necessary
thing. It's now an escape as opposed to creativity.
Mb: Have you sung in a role yet?
Karen: Oh wow! I have never been asked that. I would love
to. The Moulin Rouge appeals to me in that way.
Mb:You would have been a Pussycat or a Josie?
Karen: hahahahaha... I could have been the man with the
gun.
Mb: "Move away from the girl...don't look her in
the eyes"
Karen: Ya pretty scary...
Mb: Shoot me your url again.
Karen: Cool....thanks for asking... www.karenboshart.com
The current website is under design...actually is being
completely revamped.
Mb: Is a very nice site.
Karen: Phil Thompson from Cenobyte Design is putting together
a brilliant site. He's not only a brilliant designer (although
he'd call himself a programmer) he knows me very well and
so the new site is totally me...inside and out. It will
be posted this coming month....I am really excited about
it. There is a symbolic butterfly on it. Many people in
the industry have nick-named me butterfly because I admire
the struggles within the cocoon. I guess I relate to those
struggles. The new site will also have new streaming songs
on it. I have been diligently working in the studio on new
material.
Mb: I can tell that you believe in the web.
Karen: In what way?
Mb: You tell me.
Karen: Believe in the power of the web?
Mb: To do what?
Karen: To touch people... to bridge the gap of artists.
Mb: What gap?
Karen: The hierarchy of artist vs audience.
Mb: And what does the web do to overcome this "gap"?
Karen: The web enables every single person to be able to
relate and talk without the fear of stalking....lol
Mb: I should introduce you to some cyber celebrities
I know...stalking is a realty.
Karen: I don't ever want a person to not be able to ask
me something...or even enlighten me.
Mb says: You're songs seem sad... are you sad Karen?
Karen: That's because I am always sad. LOL
Mb: Why? What gets you down?
Karen: I always seem to have my ankle tugged on the way
up the ladder... That's more what makes me frustrated than
sad. I am very much alone...that makes me sad... hmmm...
maybe sad isn't a good word. Maybe my songs are just frustrations.
Mb: There's so much crying in your lyrics...
Karen: I have suffered alot of loss....that adds to tears....
but I think I cry about everything.... I am supersensitive.
When someone uses their words to hurt, it's as painful as
it can get. I think I write these words as an escape and
then I publish them, hoping someone else out there will
"catch the same drift" maybe it can comfort someone
else knowing they are not totally alone .
Mb: If I could give you one wish, what would it be...
anything.
Karen: wow... That's easy... I'd want my mom back....she
seemed to be the only person who caught the drift....but
then that's me being selfish...cause before she left, my
one wish was that she would be pain-free.
